Creamy Scalloped Potatoes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 3 pounds white potatoes, thinly sliced (about 1/4 inch thick)
  • Additional salt and pepper to taste

Method

  1. Prepare the Sauce:
  2. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  3. In a pan over medium heat, melt butter. Add diced onion and garlic, sauté for about 3 minutes.
  4. Stir in flour and cook for 1 to 2 minutes.
  5. Lower the heat and slowly whisk in milk and broth. Increase heat slightly, stirring until the sauce thickens and begins to boil.
  6. Season with salt and pepper. Boil for an additional minute to fully thicken.
  7. Assemble the Dish:
  8. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  9. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the dish and season with salt and pepper.
  10. Pour half of the sauce over the potatoes.
  11. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.
  12. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  13. Uncover and bake for another 35 to 45 minutes, until bubbly and golden.
  14. Optional: Broil for 3 to 4 minutes for a crisp top.
  15. Rest and Serve:
  16. Let the dish rest for 15 minutes before serving.
